Performance of “Animal Spirits” Cancelled at Club Café

Boston, MA — October 30, 2025 — Club Café has announced the cancellation of the scheduled performance of “Animal Spirits: A New Musical About Economist John Maynard Keynes,” originally set for Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 7 PM.

After thoughtful consideration of John Maynard Keynes’s history, including his leadership role in the British Eugenics Society, we have decided that presenting this production would not align with our business values or the community we serve.

The producers of “Animal Spirits” emphasized that the play was created to explore a complex historical figure, not to endorse his views:

“This is a play about a historical person who, much like Alexander Hamilton, had major flaws. We hope through this work to examine what shaped someone who had a massive impact on the world. Keynesian Economics is a term we hear on every podcast right now, but what does it mean? We do not claim in the play that this person is ‘good’ or ‘evil’—rather that this person existed and influenced our lives today.

To be clear: the creators of this play absolutely deplore eugenic policies in any form, and we will take this feedback into account as we move forward with developing this piece.”

All tickets purchased for “Animal Spirits” will be automatically refunded to the original method of payment. Patrons do not need to take further action.

“Animal Spirits” will not be rescheduled. Club Café remains committed to presenting performances that celebrate inclusivity, respect, and the diversity of our community.

“We believe the stories we share should reflect the values of our patrons and the broader community we serve,” said Club Café Management. “While this decision was not made lightly, it represents our ongoing commitment to thoughtful and responsible programming.”
