REFUGE IN RELEASE

Vocalists Hayley Thompson-King and Cassie Kollman present a night of cabaret featuring their unique twists on music by Kurt Weill, Frank Loesser, Burt Bacharach, Duke Ellington, and more. Thompson-King and Kollman along with their collaborative pianist JJ Thomchick opine and improvise on love, lust, marriage, refuge, and relations.

HAYLEY THOMPSON-KING – “A voice that could do anything doing just what it wants.” declares Americana UK. Hayley Thompson-King’s diverse career has encompassed opera, rock, and theatre performance, songwriting, recording, touring, stage directing, and teaching. Her expressivity in both singing and songwriting have been recognized as “jaw-dropping exposition that celebrates the entire cannon of rock and roll’s energy” (Paste Magazine) and “an explosive display of vocal prowess” (PopMatters). Hayley’s 2020 album Sororicide was produced by Sean Slade (Radiohead, Hole, Lou Reed). With Slade’s mentorship and direction, Sororicide accommodates garage rock and Americana while also weaving a thread back to composers from the classical realm who have influenced her work. In its review of the album, Newsweek observes, “in the vein of alt-classical song cycles and rock concept albums, her new work layers wide-reaching sonics with palpable psychodrama. At its core is the battle between an artist and the voice inside her head.” In her most recent project, Hayley returns to the stage presenting a cabaret piece entitled She Contains Multitudes. Inspired by America’s former role as a place for minds and bodies to find shelter, she explores the theme of refuge through original arrangements and improvisations on the music of Kurt Weill, John Cage, and Peter Gabriel, as well as her original music.

CASSIE KOLLMAN is a contemporary vocalist, songwriter, and bandleader who possesses an informed command of her craft and performs a wide range of musical genres, mostly those rooted in Black American traditions; including jazz, r&b, blues, indie, pop, and rock. Her specialization is vocal improvisation. Cassie released her debut album, Lady in Shoes, in 2021; an eclectic mix of groove-based, richly-textured, and imaginative original compositions and collaborations. Cassie’s songwriting is introspective, personal, and emotionally nuanced. An agile vocalist and deep listener, Cassie creates compositions and arrangements that are vocally ambitious, harmonically intricate, and lyrically exploratory. The result is a soulful experience of jazz-pop music. Cassie performs regularly as a soloist, and manages several ensembles in the Boston area. As a cross-genre vocalist, Cassie’s projects span a diverse range of instrumentation and styles, sharing the common languages of improvisation and blues. Produced by Brian Charles (Moby, Dispatch, Weakened Friends), Cassie will release her second full-length album in 2025.
